Paediatric Metabolic Trainees group

At the recent BIMDG annual conference it was decided to form a trainees group. The aim of the group is to have a forum where trainees interested in training in Inborn Errors of Metabolism can meet and discuss mutual issues. It is also the aim to raise the profile of training in Paediatric Metabolic disease and form closer links with associated groups like the Adult Metabolic trainees and Genetics Specialist Registrar group. We aim to meet twice each year and one of these meetings are arranged to coincide with the BIMDG annual meeting. The group would also circulate details of meetings that may be usefully for those in training.

At present there are two training posts in Paediatric Metabolic Medicine based in Manchester (Willink Biochemical Genetics Unit) and London (Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital). It is a prerequisite that training can only be recognized in centres were two Paediatric Metabolic Consultants are available to supervise training. Birmingham Children’s Hospital may be in a position shortly to provide a third training post pending appointment of a second consultant. There is also opportunity to train in recognized centres abroad but this need to be confirmed in advance of leaving. The two educational supervisors will be able to advise trainees on suitable opportunities.

A syllabus for training can be found on this website and it is perceived that most of the syllabus should be covered in the training time-remember that training never ends. Training for Paediatric Metabolic disease is for at least two years after completion of core training. As the field of Inborn Errors of Metabolism is rapidly expanding it is becoming increasingly difficult to justify training people with an interest only and training is aimed at delivering sub specialists in this field. Flexible training is a possibility but need to be carefully planned. At present the two posts don’t have national grid recognition but we are hoping that this will soon become a reality.
